The house sold for $273,000 at auction in October. The new ambulance has “Laddy’ as its number plates while the side of the ambulance says “In Memory of Laddy”. Snail tales The courageous tales of Marlborough’s giant land snails are being shared by the Marlborough Museum this Friday, giving children an insight into the museum’s snail collection. CEO Steve Austin will be giving a reading from the ‘Watch out Snail’ story book which portrays the journey of slime and survival. “In Marlborough we have three forms of the giant land snails which live quite secret lives in remote parts of Marlborough, so we thought children might like to come and hear the story and see the shells in
our collection. “This is something fun we want to do with the children before the school holidays end and it teaches them about the special things we have in our region,” Steve says. The readings are an hour long and run from 10am-11am, and 2pm-3pm at the Marlborough Museum. Emotional end to journey

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander After 11 days cycling from Invercargill, Tim Gaines arrived in Blenheim yesterday to complete his journey. Tim, a New Zealander who lives in Brisbane, was exhausted as he hit the brakes for the final time at Seymour Square but was still sporting a huge smile. He decided to spend his Christmas holidays cycling the length of the South Island as a personal challenge and for his friend’s daughter Shauna Manning, a 10-year-old who is battling leukaemia for the second time. “I decided I wanted to show her and her family how much support she has. “I felt so strongly about doing this as I couldn’t imagine going through what Shauna and her family are going through,” he says. The story of Tim’s journey reached mayor Alistair Sowman who was on hand to greet him, as were Sue Rose and

As Tim arrived in Blenheim he stopped to take a photo of the Welcome to Blenheim sign and says tears came to his eyes. “I was sore from head to toe but I knew at that point it was done. “It was an emotional moment,” he says. Throughout his journey Tim took videos and photographs which he sent to Shauna, and donations were raised on a Givealittle page he set up before he left. Around $3845 has been raised to date.
Arbour restaurant on Godfrey’s Road raised $17,544 for the Cancer Society Marlborough in its Food For Change Street Party last Sunday. Restaurant owners Bradley Hornby and Liz say the result was “outstanding”. “We are so proud and lucky to be part of this wonderful community.” The street party offered food, wine, gelato, and entertainment, including “good sports” Bradley Hornby and Kevin Judd from Greywacke Wines who volunteered to let people throw eggs, cream and water at them in the name of charity.

RIGHT: Tim Gaines has cycled from Invercargill to Blenheim in 11 days for a friend’s daughter who is battling cancer. He arrived in Blenheim yesterday and was met by mayor Alistair Sowman.
The Marlborough District Council will have staff and contractors wading within waterways throughout the Wairau Plains during the next two months. The work is part of the council’s requirement to manage aquatic weeds in order to maintain an effective drainage network and to monitor the ecology of waterways. Monitoring at each site will require specialist staff groups and may include night counting of fish species and will generally be completed within a one week period.
Maritime festival “goosebumps” By Cathie Bell Picton’s maritime festival continues to grow, and its success “gives you goosebumps”, founder Beryl Bowers says. The festival, held last Saturday, attracted about 8000 people, more than previously, she says. “We had a fantastic festival…There were thousands of people. The foreshore was packed.” The festival, which ran all day and ended in fireworks at night, is very much aimed as a family fun event, Beryl says. The crowd changes through the day, she says, starting with young families, then into college students during the afternoon, and

older people in the evening. “The only problem now is how to top it next year.” Beryl says she loves doing the festival and it was well worth the effort. “It’s quite mindblowing for me now. I started it 11 years ago with hardly any money. Pub Charity came on board and it got a bit bigger. Now we have four main sponsors, they’ve made it wonderful. It gives you goosebumps.” A big thank you was due to elite sponsors Interislander, NZ King Salmon, Bluebridge, and local firm Crafar Crouch, Beryl says. “They’ve been with us since we started, it’s fantastic.” Festus McBoyle entertain the crowd at the Picton Maritime Festival on Saturday.

Trust board roles popular Eleven people have put themselves up for election for four roles on the Marlborough Electric Power Trust. A postal election will be held next month, with all registered power users able to vote. The candidates are: The four sitting board members: current chairman Ross Inder, John Cuddon, Paul Ham and Malcolm Aitken; and seven new
candidates: John’s Kitchen manager and former Labour Party candidate Janette Walker, businessman and PHO chairman David Taylor; journalist Cathie Bell; accountant Susheel Dutt; Bayleys real estate agent John O’Brien; BNZ banker Domenic Romano; and Churchill Trust chief executive Nicki Stretch. Voting papers will be sent out by NZ Post on 29 February, with
voting closing at noon on March 23 when provisional results will be announced. Formal results will be announced on March 24. Trust returning officer Brenda Munro says there are more candidates for election this year than there have been the previous couple of elections. Usually there were about four candidates for three roles, but
this time, there was more interest. The 2014 election of trustees had four nominees for three positions, she says, with total votes or 6050 or 24.96 per cent of eligible voters. The 2012 election of trustees had seven nominees for three positions., with total votes of 7007 or 29.11 per cent of eligible voters.

The annual protest against the spy base in the Waihopai Valley was held on Saturday, with about 60 people from around the country taking part. Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei joined Marlborough-based Green list MP Steffan Browning and members of the Anti-Bases Campaign organisation to march through Blenheim’s business district and gather on the Waihopai Valley Road outside the base in the afternoon. That evening a screening of “Citizen Four” (the 2014 Oscar-winning documentary about Edward Snowden) was held in Blenheim. Metiria said the Green Party has long been against the spy base at Waihopai. “It’s operated by the Government Communications Security Bureau in the interests of foreign powers. It is sitting on New Zealand land while New Zealanders have little or no idea what goes on there, nor any control.” Campaign organiser Murray Horton said last year brought further revelations from Edward Snowden via Nicky Hager and others that, not only have the GCSB & Waihopai

Hundreds attend WWI pop up exhibition By Celeste Alexander Sunday was a day for reflection and in many cases education for the Wairau Valley community who attended the World War I Pop Up Museum at the local hall. Several hundred people turned out for the first of two exhibitions that is being held in Wairau Valley, with the second being held today from 11am - 3pm. The event was initiated by the Marlborough Heritage Trust as it’s first big project that aims to get out beyond the walls of the museum to the community, Marlborough Museum CEO Steve Austin says. “The idea for the pop-up museum is to talk about WWI stories specific to particular locations and communities. “What’s interesting about the Wairau Valley is that until November last year we didn’t exactly know what the contribution of Wairau Valley was to WWI. We had heard there were three men who had served and died. “After researching it we found there were actually eight,” he says. The exhibition has included two main elements. One that looked at several themes, educating people on what happened in recruitment, at home on the domestic front, the whole idea of living and dying and a section that highlighted the people from the Wairau Valley who died. The second element was focused on family fun activities including getting children to put together WWI survival kits. Children spun a wheel which decided where they would be sent to ‘serve’, they then looked at images and descriptions of terrain before choosing the equipment they would take to

survive. This involved a hands-on approach with the children packing their bags. They were then scored on what their survival rates would be based on where they were going and what they had chosen. “I think it really brought home the reality of what the survival rate was, and gave a gentle insight into what these men went through. “So far the feedback has been really great for this exhibition and people have been grateful to us for doing this in their small community. It’s also been exciting for us to hear the stories,” Steve says. Today’s exhibition is at the Wairau Valley Hall and runs from 11am - 3pm.

Dear Ed, I enjoy Jacob’s sports columnalways interesting and often thought provoking. Watching sport I am getting annoyed with Sky running up to three adverts just between games of a tennis match. Dear Ed, From the responses to the ban on commercial fishing in the Marlborough Sounds, people are misinformed about the NZ Fishing Industry, and how the Quota Management System operates. The Ministry for Primary Industries determines how much of a fish species can be caught within a management area. First the biomass of the species is determined and the percentage able to be harvested without impacting on sustainability is calculated. This total allowable catch has to cater for recreational, iwi and commercial interests. The commercial sector can only catch the amount that the MPI allocate to them from within the TAC.

Banning commercial fishing from the Marlborough Sounds and Hauraki Gulf will adversely effect more than just fishermen - for every sea-going job, four are created onshore. Most probably compensation will go to quota-holders - but what about fishermen who lease quota? What about the processors, truck drivers, administration staff - and the young bloke who’s just got a job on a fishing vessel? Are they going to be compensated? Probably not. Not everyone has a boat - or can catch their own fish - that’s what fishermen do. We harvest a sustainable resource - we don’t rape it. Jim Candy Commercial Fisherman
Blue Cod in the Pan Dear Ed, I could not believe the attitude by the fisheries side of Ministry for Primary Industries in pulling up a chap for having a cod in the fridge on his boat. Peter Watson of Marlborough Rec Fishers Assn rightly asked what about sushi? What rot the Ministry’s Ian Bright spoke about wanting to restore the cod fishery. I clearly recall making the point in 2007 there was no crisis when the ministry closed it to reccy fishing for blue cod. The science used to close it was mickeymouse. The ministry’s since admitted this. But Mr Bright keeps parroting about a collapsing fishery.
What Mr Bright needs to realise is he and his ministry which have caused the deaths of thousands and thousands of blue cod by keeping the slot rule in. Don’t blame reccy fishers and stop picking on them. Those thousands of blue cod killed make one blue cod in the fridge a lot of nonsense. That is a silly rule. Commercial or customary don’t have to do it. Talking of collapsed fisheries, what is Mr Bright going to do about the scallops? Having wrecked Tasman and Golden Bay scallop beds, now the ministry are bending over backwards to let company dredges in. Fathers hooked again

The many stages of Shakespeare Dawn Sanders, the founder and chief executive of Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand and organiser of the annual University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festivals, talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about her early days growing up in Blenheim, her promising ballet career and why the younger generations understand Shakespeare better than older generations. Dawn Sanders has made a life in the arts. But it is her never ending love affair with the work of Shakespeare that she has turned into not only a successful festival for secondary school pupils in particular but also provided global opportunities for those young people willing to work hard enough to achieve it. A product of Redwood School, Dawn then went to Bohally Intermediate and then Marlborough Girls’ College for her first year of secondary school. She was a promising ballerina at a young age. “I was determined I was going to make it all the way to the top,” she says. However, when her Blenheim-based coach went overseas, she literally had no other options so a move to Wellington East Girls’ College meant she was able to be part of the New Zealand Ballet Summer School. All the while her love of Shakespeare grew and grew, somewhat simmering in the background. She fell in love with Shakespeare at the age of seven when she helped her thespian father read lines when he was part of the Marlborough Reparatory Theatre. By the age of 15 she had read everything the playwright had ever produced. “One time, I remember telling my teacher that we should stand up when reciting Shakespeare because that’s the respect it deserved which, looking back on it, was quite a gutsy thing to do. “For me, Shakespeare always had a great way of bringing out the best in his characters and making them relatable.” Dawn was relatively injury free in her ballet career until back spasms on stage coupled with
a slip initiated a major back injury that forced her into retirement and a lengthy recovery. Following that, she did a human biology certificate and realised a frustrating fact about her plight. “I realised a lot of the medical help I was receiving was based on sports injuries and not dance injuries.” In need of a change she turned to Shakespeare. She played an integral part in getting the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival off the ground and 25 years later, and after being made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to theatre, she’s still going strong. More than 100,000 students had been through the festival in those 25 years. Every year she helps select 24 to travel to London to perform at the Globe Theatre. “Many of them still keep in touch and that’s immensely satisfying,” Dawn says. “I truly believe young people understand Shakespeare more because the older generation was taught it in such a boring way. “I know at the Festival, often it’s the students directing students and that’s huge for confidence levels and enjoyment.” Outside promoting the Bard’s work, Dawn also works on numerous arts boards and promoted the arts through positions with Toi Whakaari, the National Dance Archive and the NZ Society of Authors. She also lectured at the New Zealand School of Dance for 30 years. Dawn says she still has much to achieve in her role and she would like to expand the Festival nationally in time. There has been some recent hype on social media about the summer time nuisance of house flies, particularly the high number and how they manage to evade the many ‘do-ityourself’ counteractive measures. Has your home been over-run by ants this summer? Ants are social insects that live in large communities where they depend upon each other for the survival of the entire colony. There can be tens of thousands of ants in a single colony and several colonies inhabiting the soil or landscape surrounding a property. For that very reason, ants can be a particularly difficult pest to eradicate. All ants share one primary task - to protect and care for the colony. In order to accomplish this, ants require food, moisture and shelter. Ant nests are commonly found outside under wood piles, flagstone or brick patios and under rocks and garden stones. Ants in the house may nest in wall voids, behind insulation, or in or around wood previously damaged by moisture. You are most likely to find ants in the
kitchen or invading your property elsewhere when they are foraging for food. Foraging ants account for only a small percentage (typically 10% or less) of the colony’s size and it is important to understand that ants will travel extremely long distances in search of food or harborage. Once these foragers locate and establish a source of food, ants will produce a scent trail (by way of pheromones) leading to and from the nest. Because only a small percentage of ants within a colony are actively foraging for food, it is vitally important to inspect and locate where the ants are coming from. It is entirely possible for ants to be foraging long distances and the nest may not be located within property boundaries. Bed bugs bite at night If you wake up feeling itchy you may have been feasted on by bed bugs during the night. Many parents affectionately tell their children as they tuck them into bed, ‘don’t let the bed bugs bite’. But the reality is that the bed bugs may be biting, and you don’t know about it. Bed bugs are wingless, tiny insects that hide in cracks and crevices during the day and come out at night to feed on our blood. They are attracted by body heat and carbon dioxide from our breath and feed by using their hypodermic like mouthparts to penetrate the skin. They then inject their victim with saliva containing aneasthetic and anti-coagulant proteins to stop the blood from clotting. It’s these proteins that cause itchy reactions. Because they can ingest up to seven times their body weight in blood in one feed, they can survive long periods without feeding.

After mating takes place, Bed Bugs will lay up to 200 eggs. The nymphs that hatch out are miniature versions of the adult. There is no larval stage. Bed Bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of so if you suspect you have them, contact your local pest control company for treatment.

By Cathie Bell A cycleway between Marlborough’s two largest towns is the priority for new group Bike Walk Picton. Group chairman John Reuhman says The Picton Blenheim Cycleway will connect with the Link Pathway from Havelock and the proposed Coastal Pacific cycleway from Blenheim to the Clarence River. “The creation of a multi-day, multiple access 220km cycle trail will offer a great opportunity to leverage off Marlborough’s strengths, and it’s hugely important for Picton.” The proposed Blenheim-Picton cycleway will be a new route off the highway, and was based on the old “Sounds to Sauvignon” proposal from some years ago, John says. A “grunty” $2 million project he says, that when completed will create very significant economic, social and community benefits. “It connects well with Tourism New Zealand’s declared special interest in cycling, as well as building on existing assets.’ Bike Walk Picton is a new working group set up by Picton Smart&Connected to lead its ‘big picture” project, making Picton and surrounds a haven for biking and walking. John says the group is bringing together community groups, residents, and council representatives, and has already identified several key priorities, with the largest project clearly the pathway between Marlborough’s biggest towns.

Marlborough man Derek Cordes made sure Bay of Plenty locals were made aware they’d lost the sunshine capital crown to Blenheim, attaching a homemade sign to the Whakatane entrance sign. Derek also put two signs on the doorways of the Whakatane District Council building. Ironically, Whakatane was grey and overcast during his visit, he says. It would also work on other projects such as helping make the Picton central business district bike friendly, encouraging the upgrade of the walk and cycle path between Picton and Waikawa, helping the Link Pathway to accelerate its completion through to Picton, providing input into a Picton Foreshore Heritage Walk, and assisting Queen Charlotte Track with its funding application to improve conditions on the track for all users. The creation of a thriving ‘Bike Walk’ environment in Picton was the clear community preference at a public meeting called by Picton Smart & Connected last year, to identify one or two projects to propel the town forward. Picton Smart&Connected chairman Barry Maister says the group will continue its efforts on other immediate and short term needs for the locality. “But at the big picture level, the Bike Walk focus is an exciting opportunity the town can immediately engage with, led by the new working group. Overall, we want to make Picton one of the most bike-friendly, walk-friendly towns in the country,” he says. The Bike Walk Picton working group meets monthly, with the next meeting on February 9, and any residents interested in participating or contributing can contact John Reuhman, via info@pictonsc.org.

Veges ripe for picking Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Acting gardener for the Renwick Community Anglican Garden, Walter Scott is encouraging the community to make use of the vegetables being grown. Four years ago Renwick man Brian Powell initiated the community garden, an idea that quickly grew. The garden has been lovingly tended by a group of gardeners, including head gardener Chris Timms and has everything growing from silver beet and lettuces, to corn and potatoes. Walter wishes to see more people ‘helping themselves’, but taking only enough for themselves.
“It’s at the point where we have vegetables that are ripe and ready to be picked but no one is taking them, so we have donated a bit to John’s Kitchen and try to share them around where we can. “Don’t be shy, come in and take what you need,” he says. If anyone was wanting to donate plants or plant something themselves, the group is happy to give them some space. Likewise if there were people interested in helping out with the garden they are more than welcome, Walter says. “You don’t have to be a gardener, you could come in and learn some skills.”

Rainfall totals for January are already above average for all areas of Marlborough, but council water staff are warning the pressure is not off yet. After a record-breaking dry spell, the first weeks of 2016 have brought welcome rainfall to the region, with rainfall so far this year already exceeding the total for the last three months of 2015. The Renwick bores are now at a level that is 2421 mm above the pumps. This means Council is able to increase the output from the wells from the current 44 l/s to 50 l/s. While this is still 20 per cent below normal output, it will help to alleviate the capacity issues for the Renwick water supply during peak demand periods. However residents are reminded that water supply is still not back to normal and
people are asked to continue to be vigilant with their water conservation. If there is a further period of dry weather it may be necessary to reduce water supply output again. All rivers received another good lift from the rainfall and nearly all classes of irrigation water are still available, including most of the lower reliability class C takes, which are usually not available during summer months. The only exceptions are the less reliable irrigation classes in the Flaxbourne area and the Omaka class B where, although water was briefly available, flows quickly fell below the threshold again. The continuing good river flows and overnight rain now mean that it is unlikely there will be Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme cutbacks in the weeks ahead.

Titans deliver hits, lose first round By Celeste Alexander Last Saturday’s speedway action saw a number of classes compete for titles and trophies, including the ESS Titans who clashed with the Tasman Thunder stock car team for the Blenheim vs Nelson Teece Trophy. This was the first round of the Teece Trophy competition which saw the Titans dish out a number of good hits at the beginning. The over-the-hill rivalry never fails to draw a crowd but unfortunately for the Titans fans, Tasman Thunder managed to take the win
despite only having two cars on the track in the final race, as opposed to four of the Titans. The Titans took the loss on the chin however vowing to reclaim points needed to keep the trophy where it currently resides, with the ESS club. The second and final round of the Teece Trophy will be held in Nelson with the date currently being organised. Stock car rep Carla Marshall says the Titans team is happy with its season to date, with plenty of teams racing practice ahead of the
New Zealand Stock Car Teams Championship event in Gisborne next month. This stock car teams competition has been going between Blenheim and Nelson since 1983, but renamed the Teece Trophy a number of years ago after the late Murray Teece of Nelson who tragically passed away last month. It was created for the original stock cars which are now referred to as super stocks. According to Carla former Titans drivers Ralph Gillespie and Tim Alexander had the trophy transferred to the stock cars class.
Sprint cars to dominate this Sunday Just when you thought last weekend’s speedway action was thrilling enough just wait to hear what Eastern States has in store for this Sunday. Dubbed ‘Super Sunday’ ESS will host the MD Freighting Sprint Car International Sprint
Cars event, and so far around 18 cars have accepted the invitation and will be taking to the track this weekend. ESS will be represented by local driver Paddy North in his 46e. Among the drivers is one name many will know for his previous
sporting achievements, former Black Cap Nathan Astle racing his 9c sprint car. It is not often Blenheim has these 800+ horsepower machines in town so be sure to go along and witness these impressive machines in action.
The Sprint cars will run two 12 lap heats and a 20 lap feature with the winner taking all. Also tearing up the track will be super stocks, street stocks ‘bragging rights’ race, stock cars, productions, youth mini stocks and saloons.
The Waterlea Racecourse’s feature race, the Yealands Family Wines Marlborough Cup, on Sunday was a deadheat finish between Graduate Under Fire and Joey Maguire. The feature race on the first day of racing, the Yealands Family Wines Cup Prelude, was won by Smoken Roman, driven by Robbie Close and trained by Leonne Jones. Sport Tasman’s sandcastle comp Up until February 1, local families can submit photographs of their sandcastles to Sport Tasman and be in to win some great spot prizes. The rules are simple. Sandcastles must be made of sand either in a sandpit or at the beach, although natural objects like beach wood, feathers, flora and shells can be used for decoration. They must be built by hand only. Photographs must be emailed to wendy.bet@sporttasman.org.nz by February 1, with the winning entry and others to feature on Sport Tasman’s Facebook page. Entry is free but all entrants must register at www.sporttasman.org. nz/sandcastle in order to be in the draw for spot prizes which will be randomly selected. Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A group of ladies will be marching off to represent Marlborough this weekend looking to defend their previous podium placing. The Fun Seekers Leisure Marching team will compete at the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin on Sunday, and if their fluorescent yellow jackets are anything to go by,
they will be hard to miss. The team has been marching together for 20 years, according to team spokesperson Val Alcorn. “We still have five original members marching today, and another who has been with us for 13 years,” she says. Val says the team is looking to defend its third place title won in 2014, or better it. There is more to just march-
ing through, Val explains. “We have entered our uniforms as well as the way we present ourselves is also important to the competition. “That’s why we wear fluorescent yellow, so we look striking and stand out,” she laughs. Of the 12 team members 11 will make the trip and “with some luck” return victorious.
The Fun Seekers Leisure Marching team is heading to Dunedin on January 31 to compete in the New Zealand Masters Games.
